Agroecological zoning in three regions - Bafatá, Quinara and Tombali of Guinea-Bissau

Objectives
To develop a simple and reliable methodology for high-resolution analysis of crop suitability — in three regions of Guinea-Bissau, Bafatá, Quinara and Tombali — under current and future climatic conditions, that would be easy to apply and useful to support decision-making and agricultural development plans.

METHODOLOGY AND RESULTS
-
The Agroecological Zoning (AEZ) produced a set of maps that indicate and classify the suitability of each square kilometer of the target area for each selected crop (18 crops were selected), both under current climatic conditions and under projected future conditions.
-
Each specific agroecological map results from the combination of a climate suitability map (current or future) with a soil suitability map, both produced with a resolution of 1 km.
-
The current and future suitability for each crop was assessed considering that no inputs are used, which means that the effects of irrigation or fertilization, including organic fertilization—which are used in a very limited way in Guinea-Bissau—are not taken into account.

-
Agroecological results relating to upland rice in the three study regions and poster on palm crops (in Portuguese)

Stakeholder Sessions | 2016 Bissau
-
Two sessions were held with stakeholders in Bissau: (1) presentation and discussion of the methodology (March); and (2) sharing and discussion of preliminary results (June).

Fieldwork and capacity building | 2016
-
Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) | Two fieldwork campaigns were carried out throughout the study area - Bafatá, Quintara and Tombali (08/04/2016 to 21/04/2016 and 02/06/2016 to 08/06/2016) with the aim of conducting a socioeconomic survey of a total of 41 households in the communities: 41 interviews, 31 focus groups and 381 questionnaires.

-
On-the-job training | On-the-job training on ARP methods was provided to local technicians throughout the study area.

-
Workshops | Three workshops were held at IBAP headquarters (Bissau, Guinea-Bissau) with the aim of training local technicians in various topics, including:
-
Geographic Information Systems (GIS) | 30-hour Workshop | 5 sessions (March 14, 2016 to March 18, 2016)

-
Agroecological Zoning (AEZ) | 30-hour Workshop | 5 sessions (June 13-17, 2016)

-
Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) | 30-hour Workshop | 5 sessions (May 23-27, 2016)
